The Comprehensive Vaginosis Profile uses a self-collected vaginal sample to help identify common causes of infectious vaginitis, including bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection), and Trichomonas vaginalis.
The profile evaluates vaginal microflora and provides a bacterial vaginosis score based on the Nugent Scoring System to help distinguish between potential causes of symptoms such as itching, burning, discomfort, and abnormal discharge.
Samples are also cultured for yeast, dysbiotic bacteria, and normal Lactobacillus species.
When appropriate bacterial or fungal organisms are identified, antimicrobial susceptibility testing to selected prescription and natural agents is also performed to help guide treatment decisions.
Other options:
(1) A Bacterial Vaginosis for 15 different bacteria another CLIA lab, as an alternative.
(2) For Aerobic Vaginitis, when an inflammation from the growth of certain bacteria causes vaginal itching and redness
(3) For Candida Vaginitis, in which infection from candida fungus causes thick white discharge and very painful irritation.

What is a Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) and how it differs from other vaginal infections?
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) occurs when the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted, allowing certain bacteria to become more abundant.
BV is common and may cause unusual vaginal discharge or odor, although many women with BV have no noticeable symptoms.
Symptoms alone are not always enough to distinguish between common vaginal infections.
Vaginal symptoms such as itching, burning, discomfort, pain, odor, or abnormal discharge may be associated with several conditions, including:
Aerobic Vaginitis (AV) – An inflammatory condition associated with changes in vaginal bacteria, often accompanied by irritation, burning, pain, or abnormal discharge. Learn more about the Aerobic Vaginitis Test.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) – An imbalance of vaginal microflora characterized by a reduction in normal Lactobacillus bacteria and increased levels of certain anaerobic bacteria. BV may cause a characteristic vaginal odor and discharge, but it can also occur without symptoms.
Vulvovaginal Candidiasis – A vaginal yeast infection commonly associated with itching, irritation, burning, and thick discharge. Learn more about the Candida Vaginitis Test.
A Vaginosis Test helps determine whether changes in vaginal bacteria are consistent with BV rather than relying on symptoms alone.
The Comprehensive Vaginosis Profile uses a self-collected vaginal sample and examines vaginal microflora, including Lactobacillus and potentially dysbiotic bacteria, and provides a BV score based on the Nugent Scoring System.
The profile can also help differentiate BV from Candida (yeast) infection and Trichomonas vaginalis, a sexually transmitted parasite.
When appropriate bacterial or fungal organisms are cultured, antimicrobial susceptibility testing to selected prescription and natural agents may also be performed to help inform treatment decisions.
BV itself is not generally classified as a sexually transmitted infection, although sexual activity can influence the risk of developing or recurring BV.
Identifying BV is important because it has been associated with an increased susceptibility to certain sexually transmitted infections and complications involving the reproductive tract and pregnancy.
What are the symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) and when a test is useful?
Vaginosis may not always have any symptoms. But a few common symptoms include:
Unexpected watery vaginal discharge of white or gray color.
Vaginal odor that smells like rotten fish.
Painful burning and itching during peeing.
Constant sensation of itching, burning or pain in or around the vagina.
Increase in smell or discharge after sex or douching.
The test is useful in cases of:
Vaginal Discomfort
Vaginal Discharge
Persistent Yeast Infection
What does a BV Test check for?
You can download a sample report to see what markers are tested.
A vaginosis test from Doctor's Data Labs reports:
BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS SCORE: calculated using Nugent Scoring System and is based upon the gram stain results; it is independent of the yeast, and bacterial cultures.
0 - 3: BV not likely
4 - 6: BV indeterminate
7-10: BV highly suggestive
GRAM STAIN MICROSCOPY: (as normal, abnormal and compares to what's expected)
Lactobacilli
Curved Gram Negative Rods
Small Gram Negative Rods
Yeast
RBC’s
WBC’s
Clue Cells
Eosinophils (reported and Wrights Stain performed when WBC’s >6)
BACTERIOLOGY CULTURE
Expected/Beneficial flora such as Lactobacillus species
How to check bacterial vaginosis at home with a self-collected swab, from the privacy and comfort of home?
We offer multiple options for ordering a simple, low-cost BV test to assess your infection without going to a doctor or a lab.
Order the test kit online, collect a sample with a few swabs, send the sample to our CLIA-certified labs, and find out your results in a few days.
Q: Can I purchase the test across US?
A: Except New York our tests are available in all 49 states. State regulations in NY do not allow us to ship the tests to their residents and labs won't be able to test them. NY residents with another address should consider ordering from outside NY.
We also ship to Canada and rest of the world.
Q: What does the BV Test kit contain and how do I use it?
A: The kit for our Vaginosis Test contains a vaginal swab, a sample preserving tube, instructions on how to collect the sample, and a form for basic information including date and time of collection. The directions are straightforward and easy to follow.
Q: How long does it take to receive the results?
A: In most cases, USPS delivers the kit within 3-5 business days. For orders within US, your kit includes a prepaid return envelope.
For orders outside US, shipping to your address is FREE but we do not cover return shipping to the lab. However, all the necessary paperwork for cross-border shipping are included.
After you ship the sample and it is received by the lab, most results are available within 5-7 business days.
Q: How do you handle my samples and data?
A: Your samples are kept by the lab for a few weeks and the extracted DNA is kept for a few months. The samples are disposed off in biohazardous waste that is picked up by a certified waste management company that specializes in medical waste disposal and follows strict regulatory guidelines.
Regarding your data: the labs are required to keep the data for a minimum of 2 years (varies for each lab). Your data is not released anyone else except those authorized by you or as required by the law. We also ensure that such information is stored securely in accordance with HIPAA and other applicable federal as well as state laws and regulations. In certain cases, we may have to release information to a third party if such information is required for medical treatment, emergency or by federal or state law.
Q: What do I expect from the report?
A: The report with your test results will be easy to understand and will have all the necessary details. The report will also briefly discuss what the results mean.
Q: Can I use my insurance to pay for the test?
A: No. We do not have the capability to process insurance claims. Insurance plans vary by individuals and may not pay for certain tests. Please talk to your insurance provider if you have any further concerns. We are happy to provide a receipt if you want to submit it yourself, or require one for HSA or FSA accounts.
Q: How reliable are my results?
A: We have partnered with CLIA-certified labs that are used by physicians across the US. These labs are regulated by the states, as well as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Many tests from these labs are FDA approved to ensure they meet the proper regulatory requirements. Additionally, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) requires inter-laboratory tests to ensure the ranges established by each lab do not drift or are within acceptable ranges. This is done through regularly testing reference samples between different labs. Finally, the labs test thousands of sample for different age groups and health conditions, and have well established reference data to compare your results against this large pool.
Q: Can you recommend what therapy should I take if my levels are high or low?
A: Unfortunately, no. As a lab test provider we can only test and report out data from your samples. We are not authorized to provide any medical recommendations. But we strongly encourage you to discuss the results with your doctor for next steps.
